Spectra - Ryoji Ikeda

For my Advanced New Media class I have to install a piece in the north gallery in march.  I’m suppose to record my progress online therefore I will be blogging about my process as I continue creating a project.

To get started my main objective is that I want to create a sculpture that reacts within the realm of New Media.  I also take a lot of inspiration from Ryoji Ikeda (Spectra- video above) who incorporates light as a medium of sculpture.  I would like to do a similar thing but instead of using search lights I would like to incorporate the light from the projector as a medium for sculpture.

I’m heading in several different directions as to how to combine the two ideas and before I decided to start implementing I’ll have to do tons more research.  Right now I’m exploring the many ways that “reflection” can be interpreted.

The comparison of a physical reflection and a media fabricated reflection is really interesting to me.  I had an idea to project a live feed onto a extremely reflective surface so that you can see your reflection against a sort of “pseudo-reflection”.  Theoretically, technology should add the slightest delay giving the two images a kind of ghostly effect.  As a person/people approach the wall, their physical reflection will cast on the wall and the back-projection will mimic their reflection with the technological reflection.  On the other side of the wall, the ‘back-side’, the person/people will be standing in front of the projector casting a shadow onto the wall, allowing the mirror to fill in the shadowed area making the project three dimensional and viewable from all directions.

Your Hair is Like a Bird’s Nest(my cousin) Let me explain.. In my intermediate figure drawing class our final project is to draw the figure in a meaningful environment.  I want to attempt to include the environment in the figure itself; hence the bird’s nest.   Since I have no other use for my tumblr I decided that I’m just going to post my art concepts and ideas so see what everyone thinks.  Lezzgoo.
